Birds Over the NE

UPDATED 9.5.04 @ 6:47am:
Here’s the local radar loop from sunset last night to sunrise this morning:

Birds are seen moving over New Jersey with densities picking up in the early morning (2am). Densities are not as high as during the past two cold fronts, but should result in new birds in the Garden State.

So the NEXRAD is lighting up alright, but not over New Jersey. A major movement out of Maine and points north though, could result in a new influx of birds to our area tomorrow or soon thereafter. I’ve posted the velocity plots for Portland, ME and Fort Dix, NJ from sunset to 10:00pm.

Portland, Maine (I’ve also provided the latest base reflectivity for Maine (single image from 10:17pm) just so you can see how dense this movement is!):

Notice how there’s major movement across the Maine radar from the NE to the SW. The winds in Portland are currently 8kts out of the east, yet the movement in the radar is 20 – 25kts due SW…BIRDS!
If you look at the NJ velocity you’ll see some movement heading south. This is likely birds, as the prevailing wind is light out of the west, contrary to the southbound movement on the velocity plot. The major difference between the two is the sheer density, New Jersey being sparse at best. It’ll be interesting to check the radar in the morning, and see if some of the density to our north makes it into our local radar.
