Recipe for a fallout

Migration Gumbo

  • 2 tbs Nocturnal Migrants
  • 1 C Cold Front

Mix thoroughly between 1-5 AM
Empty into local park
Bird hard 545 – 845 F

As you can see from the radar, birds are on the move tonight. What you can’t see is that birds are on the move all down the east coast as well. The cold front is making its way down into New Jersey but it doesn’t seem to be packing very much precipitation. Winds should build out of the west as the front crosses us, then switch to northwest after it passes. This wind switch, coupled with any precipitation, should shut down migration. Picking the best birding spot for tomorrow should be based on where the wind switch and precipitation are occurring closest to sunrise. Currently the winds are still out of the west in Binghamton, NY, indicating that the front is wide which should buy us some time. With the west wind component expected after midnight, Sandy Hook is a good candidate for morning migrants. Garret Mountain should also be productive, as should any other traditional spring hotspots. This will be the last post until tomorrow afternoon- so make sure to check the local weather and real-time radar for the morning update.

UPDATED!
Gosh- me and my central NJ bias…CAPE MAY will probably be good tomorrow, as winds in Somerset are already switching to the WNW as of 11:40pm.
