Migration over Jerze

Well, the front cleared in time for birds to take flight on a tailwind last night. Here’s the radar from sunset last night through sunrise this morning. There was clearly some anomalous propagation mixed in with the actual bird migration signal, probably due to the strong temperature inversion after sunset (the air was much colder than the earth at sunset). The migration signal becomes much more apparent later in the evening, once the temperature inversion dissipated (look for the strong north–>south signal in the velocity image about half-way though the night). What are we seeing on the radar? Well, judging by the diversity around my place the last few days, probably more White-throated Sparrows, Golden-crowned Kinglets, and many of the birds we’d expect to hang around through the winter. This is also a great time for sparrow diversity, so grab a coat and hit those hedges!

So how do you like the new images? Better than the old ones? I’d appreciate your comments below.

  1. The new images are great – more friendly to those of us without a sense of direction.
