Heavy migration across the eastern flyway

Last night was a beaut! Northeast winds and clear skies paved the way for heavy migration across the region. Here’s the radar from 7:00pm last night through 5:00am this morning.

Frames are every 1/2 hour. Click on the thumbnail to view the full-sized animation.

The regional composite really tells the story for last night’s migration event. As you can see, just after sunset birds are picked up on every radar across the northeast and mid-Atlantic. Looking at the local radars, it’s apparent that birds were headed with the wind, from the NNE->SSW. With no weather-related obstacles to concentrate birds, the best conditions today will be inland migrant traps, as well as points along the northern Delaware Bay shore (where geography and topography dictate the concentration of birds). Given the continued northeast winds today, expect a good push of raptors through the region, favoring inland NJ, and PA hawkwatches.

Good Birding
