Some birds heading SW last night

It looks like some birds took off last night, but not nearly the densities we saw over the last two nights. Here’s the radar from 6:00pm last night through 6:00am this morning.

Frames are every 1/2 hour. Click on the thumbnail to view the full-sized animation.

The sign on the door reads: “Birds Were Here”

And they really were, lots of them. Last night the winds were out of the east, and in some cases the southeast, but some birds decided that they were ready to head south, and dammit, it’s too crowded in NJ anyway. Migration was lighter than the last two nights, but then again, conditions were also less-than-optimal last night. Expect coastal locations to “thin out” today, and inland locations to pick up a few new birds. If you have a favorite sparrow meadow in Central NJ, or along the Delaware River, head there this morning!

Also, in case you’re interested, I added and updated the posts from when I was gone on 10/12: http://www.woodcreeper.com/2009/10/12/more-migration-over-the-ne-and-mid-atlantic/ and 10/11: http://www.woodcreeper.com/2009/10/11/huge-flight-into-the-ne-and-mid-atlantic/

Good Birding
