Birds head out

Last night’s southwest winds triggered migration over NJ, NY and much of the Northeastern US while lingering storms along the warm front to our south precluded any new arrivals. Here’s the radar from sunset last night through 5:00am this morning.

Frames are every 1/2 hour. Click on the thumbnail to view the full-sized animation.

Birds were on the move over the Garden State but most of that movement was headed out with little replacement. As far as birding goes, expect little change in the southern Mid-Atlantic today while locations in the north should see some turnover without any major concentrations.

Tonight expect more widespread migration from South Carolina up into the Northeast as the stationary front over the Carolinas dips further south.

Good Birding

One response to “Birds head out”

  1. I actually did have some stuff this morning while working! This isn’t a migrant area, but definite new stuff as my timing was the same on Sat. and different from then.
    2 RUBY-CROWNED KINGLETS
    1 GOLDEN-CROWNED KINGLET
    YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLERS
    WHITE-THROATED SPARROWS
    80 or so DARK-EYED JUNCOS
I really enjoy looking at the radar and trying to predict when birds
move! Here’s hoping we have a good migrant spring! And thanks
    for doing this.
