Light to moderate migration was evident over all three radar stations last night, although west winds across the southern forecast zone pushed birds parallel to the southern Lake Eerie shoreline with little apparent overwater crossing. Birds again moved north over the Detroit radar suggesting a continued exodus out of the northeast lakes shore. What will this mean for birding in the region? An exodus without replacement is never something you hope for during migration, so I expect locales along the northeast lake shore to experience a net loss in birds this morning. The westward movement across Cleveland and Pittsburgh means a couple of things. First, no big influx from the south since we would want birds heading to the southeast lake shore from the direction of the Pittsburgh radar. Second, the westward movement around the lake may bring us some new birds today and could mean that birds will begin to pile up along the lakeshore throughout the day as they find their way into more optimal foraging habitat. Overall I expect some turnover in birds at The Biggest Week, but we’ll have to wait another day for any big influx of birds.

As always, woodcreeper.com depends on you to report your sightings and be our ‘eyes on the ground’, so please come back and give us an idea of how we’re doing predicting birding conditions in your neck of the woods.

Good Birding,

David
