Frames are every 1/2 hour for reflectivity and velocity, and every hour for the regional composite. Click on the thumbnail to view the full-sized animation.

As you can see from the composite image, migration was heaviest around the northeastern US and down around the Great Lakes, where southerly winds were strongest along the edge of the approaching cold front. Still, with clear skies and light winds over our area, Zugunruhe got the better of many birds that may have otherwise waited out better conditions just a weeks ago. Such are the patters of spring!

With no weather in the forecast to concentrate birds, but with light west winds over the state, I think the best bets for today will be inland migrant traps (Garret Mountain being my favorite) and coastal locations such as Sandy Hook. Of course, the best opportunity for diversity will be in south Jersey, and with the influx of birds apparent on the radar, we should see some new arrivals there this morning.

AGHHHH! (whew, sorry, the radar scared me again…I’m over it now). Another fright-night of migration, with clear skies and light tailwinds. Not as much as the previous night, but still birds on the move. Like I said a few days ago, diversity has peaked and is dwindling, so I’m gonna pull the plug on the radar study for this season as of today. I’ll keep an eye on things over the next week or so, and if anything interesting pops up, I’ll post it; otherwise, it’s been a great Fall, and your participation, whether through commenting or just by visiting, has made it all worth it.

Massive Monster Migration two nights ago! I’m sorry it took me so long to post- but I was up in Sussex taking the hunter education course yesterday.
Here’s the radar anyway…pretty impressive. Hey Rob, can you see the LeConte’s flying across the radar? It’s the little yellow dot…right near the Celery Farm.

Last night saw a light migration over the Garden State. I think we’re getting to the dwindling point as far as migration is concerned. I’d still expect a few more good movements over the next two weeks, but the days of diverse nocturnal movements have passed, at least until Spring. The first big, snowy fronts are approaching, so bring on the throngs of Robins and White-throats (not to mention the winter finches, owls, and waterfowl!). I plan to run the radar updates up until Halloween, so set your watches.
