Migration and weather

Migration was evident on the Mt. Holly radar (KDIX) just after sunset and continues until about 4:00am. The Dover (KDOX) radar was quiet throughout the night, showing only a trickle of birds early in the night followed by precipitation. You can see by the composite image, migration to our north predominated, while to our south was minimal. Based on this, I’d expect birding conditions to be best in the north and decline to the south, although no new spring species are expected for the state.

Frames are every 1/2 hour for reflectivity and velocity, and 1 hour for the regional composite

  1. Big flocks of White-throats around. Heard a Fox Sparrow sing- but I didn’t have my ‘nocs to see if there were more in the big sparrow flock. I’ll check once the rain clears after lunch.

  2. Yup- looks like the Phoebes have departed, as have the masses of Golden-crowned Kinglets. Song, White-throated, Field, and Fox sparrows were all around, and listed in order of decreasing abundance. The usual suspects continue, including chickadees doing both Carolina and Black-capped songs.
