Back-door birds in the south

Here’s the radar from sunset last night through 6:00am this morning.

Frames are every 1/2 hour for reflectivity and velocity, and every hour for the regional composite. Click on the thumbnail to view the full-sized animation.

The northeast composite crapped out early last night, so it’s not included here.

No birds were seen migrating into or out of central and northern Jersey last night, as winds were SSE through most of the night while the front approached and crossed our area from west to east.
Interestingly, the front cleared Pennsylvania early enough that the northwest winds behind in stimulated migration immediately following the front. These birds (I call them the “back-door birds”) can be seen making their way into extreme south Jersey and the Delmarva peninsula early this morning. This will be interesting to see how it plays out on the morning flight. I suspect the only “new birds” over the state will be in Cape May and maybe the Bayshore, whereas most locations should have plenty of birds held over from the last few days. Tonight should be better for migration, with winds forecast to be light and out of the NW.

P.S. Come check out my migration forecast for the Mid-Atlantic on Birdcapemay.org
