Moderate to heavy migration last night

You don’t know how good it feels to be back, and finally able to post the radar again. Here’s the radar from sunset last night through sunrise this morning.

Frames are every 1/2 hour for reflectivity and velocity, and every hour for the regional composite. Click on the thumbnail to view the full-sized animation.

Migration was moderate to heavy over New Jersey last night, as overnight winds were light WSW and accompanied by periodic light rain. Both the Dover and Fort Dix radars show movement of birds on a SW–>NE trajectory, peaking around midnight, and tapering off into the early morning. Because no major frontal boundary was present which may have cause fallout conditions, expect the best birding conditions to be at known spring migrant traps. Because of the easterly movement, Sandy Hook will be a good bet today (as it probably will be tomorrow, based on the weather forecast for tonight).

Good Birding

  1. Sandy Hook was very good today with about 18sp of warbler including many Wilson’s and Canada’s.
Alder ,Acadian and Willow Flycatcher’s, both Cuckoos, Common Nighthawk flying near the Hawkwatch and the best bird was the Mississippi Kite at 12:20PM seen from the Hawkwatch and from south of the garden by a number of observers. There were also double digit numbers of Rose-breasted Grosbeaks and Scarlet Tanagers. RB Nuthatch, flyover bobolinks,Chipping, Savannah, Lincoln’s and WC Sparrow amongst other birds. Looking forward to see what tomorrow brings to the Hook.
