More birds over Jerze

Conditions were favorable last night, with clear skies, and winds from the northwest (north Jersey and NY) and northeast (south Jersey and the Delmarva). Here’s the radar from 7:00pm last night through 5:00am this morning.

Frames are every 1/2 hour. Click on the thumbnail to view the full-sized animation.

Migration was heavy, and the velocity images suggest most movement was from the NE->SW. This should favor inland migrant traps, but Cape May will still have a good influx of birds since upper-level winds over north and central Jersey were northwesterly for most of the night. This most likely lead to a good number of birds being off the NJ coast this morning.

Good Birding

  1. Gloucester County today. Wheelabrator. Again a mid morning start. Hardly any sparrows today, but the habitat here is different than Palmyra. Not much in the way of a grassy, weedy area. But lots of open areas with scattered trees, open woods, a powerline cut, etc. Mainly
    YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLERS – 250
PALMS – 30 or so. Both races, but a majority were “eastern”.
    And both KINGLETS again.
    BLACKPOLLS – 12. Wow.
1 CAPE MAY WARBLER was very nice.
1 BALTIMORE ORIOLE – late for me up in this area. But I usually have them off and on down in Cumberland and Cape May counties.

  2. Birded Rutgers Ecological Preserve this morning:
    Yellow-Rumps 70+
    Common Yellowthroat 5
    Ruby-crowned Kinglet 10
    Field Sparrow 1
    Cedar Waxwing 10

  3. A Blue-headed Vireo flew into my bedroom last night!!! Fat score of 1.

  4. Celery Farm Big Sit recorded 65+ species. incl. RE Vireo, Rusty BB, Wigeon, Coot, PB Grebe, Killdeer, Gr. Egret, etc. 7+ Pine Siskins were seen on the trail. Another birded did a separate Big Sit in another part of the refuge and recorded 66 sp w/ 6 warblers including Orange-crowned.
