First post of the season!

Well, it looks like we had a little migration over the northeast and mid-Atlantic last night! Winds started out light and out of the northwest, turning light and northerly during the night. Clear skies and a light tailwind made for some good migration conditions.

Frames are every 1/2 hour. Click on the thumbnail to view the full-sized animation.

All radars over New Jersey indicate a general NW->SE trajectory; typical after the passage of fronts from the west. The Fort DIX radar shows a solid flight of birds being funneled down into Cape May region of New Jersey, and the Dover radar indicates a continuation of birds down into the Delmarva Peninsula. With no weather to concentrate these birds, expect the best concentrations to be at redirection points (where birds find themselves over water at sunrise) along the east coast, such as Cape May point, or Higbee’s beach.

I will now be including the radar from Upton New York (station KOKX), and if you check out the animation, you’ll see that a nice flight took place from Long Island over the Atlantic Ocean, headed for the New Jersey coast. These birds over water this morning will most likely be making landfall along the Jersey shore in the next few hours. Sandy Hook would be a good place to check given the trajectory.

Okay, that’s it for today’s post- now it’s your turn to get out there and find some birds. Please come back and let us know what’s out there, as this website functions best when it’s a collaborative effort! 🙂

Good Birding

P.S. You should check out Badbirdz-Reloaded, now being run by my friends Angel and Mariel Abreu. They’re doing an awesome job posting the radar and reporting migration over Florida and the Caribbean.
