Heavy migration over NE and Mid-Atlantic last night

Sorry for the late post… it’s going to be a little hectic until after I defend my thesis next week. The word was MIGRATION last night, as the skies were relatively clear and the winds light. Here’s the radar from 6:00pm last night through 6:00am this morning.

Frames are every 1/2 hour. Click on the thumbnail to view the full-sized animation.

As usual, most movement across the NJ radars was NNW->SSE, while birds leaving the south shore of Long Island tended to be moving SW toward the NJ coast. That should mean good things for the Jersey Shore this morning and today, as birds funnel down the coast on their way south. New birds should be apparent across the state today, as migration was heavy and widespread. Judging by the radar alone, it appeared that more birds entered the state than had left, leading me to believe there would be more birds around today than yesterday.

Of course, only you would know, so please stop back and give us an update on your Friday in the field!

Good Birding

David

  1. Holy MIGRATION Bat Man! You guys are getting all the birds up there, send down some of these birds for us please. Down here it looked alright, better for the Northern portions of the state though. Seems as if shorebirds made it in last night, where are you Mr. Phalarope? Keep up the great job and good luck defending!
