Not much moving on the radar last night

With winds out of the WSW, no migrating birds could be identified on the radar last night. There was a signal, but all movement was WSW at speeds consistent with the prevailing winds. That said, I received some reports of some nocturnal flight calls, mostly sparrows, from Central NJ last night. It’s possible that birds were moving locally, or “thinking about” migrating, but didn’t go far (or high) enough to be picked up on the radar. A report from Chase Schiefer stated that the birding was good at Sandy Hook, which could be a remnant from yesterdays arrivals, or some birds moving locally off of the mainland toward the coast last night. As always, your reports and observations are always encouraged.

Tomorrow is the Big Sit event. I’ll be sitting with some of the greats, down at the Hawk Watch platform in Cape May. Come on my and join us if you’re around!

Good Birding!

  1. Palmyra – Burlington County. Another active dredge spoils site along the Delaware River. This one has more mature trees than NP dredge spoils though. Anyway, super, although as David mentioned, whether the stuff came in Thursday night – Friday morning is always hard to determine up here. Some highlights:
    15 warbler species including:
    3 CONNECTICUTS
    1 WILSON’S
    2 NASHVILLE’S
    many TENNESSEE’S
    1 SCARLET TANAGER
    2 BLUE-HEADED VIREOS
    3 SWAINSON’S THRUSHES
    1 HERMIT THRUSH
all the common Sparrow species. These were not in good numbers though. It was basically YELLOW-RUMPED and PALM WARBLERS. At least numbers wise for me.
I didn’t get there until the afternoon. I didn’t see all those warbler species. Other than that, I managed everything. More on a Jerseybirds post.

  2. I think that wave of activity I had around 9, was due to the wave of nasty westher coming in. It seemed that birds were moving in small waves ahead of the drizzle and strong winds, which once they arrived completely shutdown activity. I just looked at the radar for tonight at ten, looks like the east coast is engulfed in birds!
