Migration Forecast: More birds on the way

Not much going on over the Garden State right now, possibly due to the foggy/rainy conditions. To our south, though, is another story. Right after midnight the Norfolk, VA radar began to light up with birds making a move across the Delmarva Peninsula. The Dover AFB radar is just beginning to show some birds entering the view of the radar, entering from the south, as what appears to be the leading edge of this wave across the Chesapeake and Delaware Bays. You can view all of this through the following links:

Mid-Atlantic Regional Composite – 8:00pm – 10:00pm
Okay, this is really cool. The regional view doesn’t give you as much detail, but it gives you the “big picture”, so check this out first. What you see is that after sunset (look for the quick flash of linear radar that points from the center of the radar circle to the west, indicating the sun “flashing” the radar as it goes down) the Norfolk VA NEXRAD immediately begins to show activity, and after a few seconds that activity extends into the Chesapeake and Delaware Bay, where it is then picked up on the Dover AFB radar.

Norfolk VA NEXRAD
Now here is the Norfolk NEXRAD by itself, in higher resolution. The time spans sunset to 2 hours after sunset. This is a typical migration signature, a good “lift off” of birds after sunset depicted by a “growing doughnut” of activity around the radar station.
Dover AFB NEXRAD
Now here is the Dover NEXRAD, from sunset until 3 hours after sunset. I had to give this one an extra hour so you could actually see the birds entering the radar as they came across the bay. Awesome, right??!

Fort DIX NEXRAD
Here’s the Fort DIX NEXRAD, the one that I usually show in the morning posts. This one is for the same time period as the Dover radar, but there’s no point in watching it because there’s NOTHING on it! No birds leaving our area so far tonight (actually, there are a few, but it’s tiny in comparison to the others).

So, the big questions is how far will the VA birds travel tonight. We’ll have to check the radar in the morning and find out!
Sweet Dreams 🙂
