Okay, here’s the radar from sunset last night through sunrise this morning. Big migration last night, as you can probably tell from my earlier post. Birds are seen lifting off in the typical fashion, then moving across the radar in an even distribution owing to the perfect weather conditions (southerly tailwind, clear skies for navigation, no precipitation to impede movement, etc.). Since migration was so widespread up and down the east coast, I’d expect some definite new species arrivals this morning. Tried-and-true migrant trap locations will be best, but all locations should see a few new birds…now to ground-truth my forecast!

So I went for a walk this morning around the property and noticed that overall there were many more birds than the last couple of days, but the diversity remained consistent. Field sparrows were in noticeably higher numbers. I await the reports from Cape May and Garett, as I think my location tends to take a day for birds to settle in after a big flight (unless there’s a weather event that forces them down).
